When you’re on the go, there may be occasions when you want to connect to a public Wi-Fi network. This network could be at a coffee shop, an airport, hotel, mall, or virtually anywhere. Since public wireless networks are accessible to anyone, it’s impossible to know who might be connected at any moment.
When you log into different accounts or share sensitive information like bank details, a malicious user on the same network could exploit specific tools to intercept your data. Because of this, it’s essential to use public Wi-Fi connections with caution, here’s a few tips on how to keep the information on your devices safe and secure.
1. Verify the network you are connecting to.
Just as hackers try to impersonate companies in emails, impersonator Wi-Fi networks are out there too – the local cafe’s network may be beans_wifi, but a fake may try to trick you with a name like beanz__wifi (note the incorrect spelling and double underscore). If ever in doubt, check with the staff for the correct Wifi network.
2. Avoid transmitting sensitive information over public Wi-Fi.
This goes for anything where you have to log in to personal or business accounts (banks etc).
3. Forget the network when you’re done using it.
It’s important to know when your phone has connected to a public Wi-Fi network, to prevent your device from automatically reconnecting in the future without you being aware, remember to go into your settings and “forget the network” before logging off.
4. Use your phone’s hotspot instead of public Wi-Fi.
The best way to avoid malicious Wi-Fi intent is to use your phone’s hotspot or cellular data whenever possible, as it is more secure.
